Sam Birmingham, President

Sam began his involvement with the WAAFL in 2003 as a commitee member and player for the West Coast Amateur Football Club. He has held various positions on the commitee including President. He also won the West Coast AFC 2006 'SPINE' award for Best Clubman. 

Sam was a club delegate for the WAAFL Amateur Status working party and was also involved with working with the council and local community groups to support the $1.1million redevelopment of the City Beach Oval Pavilion. Birmingham holds a law and economics degree from the University of Western Australia and is a self-employed business owner and University lecturer.

George Nicholls, Vice President

George was elected to the WAAFL Board at the 2011 AGM after having been involved as a player and administrator since 1996. He began his playing career for the Wembley Amateur Football Club in 1996, retiring from amateur football at the end of 2001 before returning in an off field capacity as Trinity Aquinas A-Grade Assistant Coach in 2006.

George continued to involve himself off the field, becoming Football Director and joining Trinity Aquinas’s Management Committee in 2007.In 2009, George was elected President of the club and held the position until 2011 before coming onto the WAAFL Board. Professionally, George is Chief Financial Officer for a rural import/export company.

Bill Armstrong

A secondary school teacher and an accomplished player, Bill played WAAFL football with the Mount Lawley Amateur Football Club between 1981 and 1998 having won five A-Grade Premierships.

He has also represented the Swan Districts Football Club (WAFL 1986), Railways Football Club (GNFL 1992-1993) and Central Crocs (MFL 1998 - 2005). He represented the WAAFL as a state player in 1984, 1987, 1988, 1989 and was Captain in 1991, as well as being a WAAFL State Selector in 1990. In 1988 he was an AAFC Representative at the Bicentennial Carnival and a year later was again AAFC Representative at the NFL Division 2 Carnival.

After retiring from WAAFL football, Bill continued involvement with the state program, coaching the WAAFL State Colts team from 1995 to 1997 and serving as a member of the State Representative Football Sub-Committee between 2004 and 2006. Bill was first elected to the WAAFL Board in 2004.

Mark Burgess 

Mark has held commitee roles at the Manning Rippers Football Club including President and Vice President. Mark is currently completing a Masters of Business Administration to add to his previous degree in Social Work. He has 14+ years of experience working with children, young people and families. As part of his work Mark has held senior management roles in both government and non government organisations. Mark currently works for the Department of Corrective Services as an Assistant Director for Youth Justice Services. 

Mark's board portfolio is Integrated Football and Social Impact.

Matt Grant

Matt has been a player at the Hamersley Carine AFC since 2011. He has also held roles on the committee for six years.

Outside of football Matt has a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting and business law from Curtin University. He owns and runs his own financial planning business in Fremantle which he set up 4 years ago.

Matt has held various other board positions such as Treasurer of the Curtin Commerce Club and Activities Vice President of the Curtin University Student Guild.

Jon Knox

Jon has been on the Executive Committee at the Ocean Ridge Amateur Football Club for the past nine years, six of those as President. He has also held positions as Treasurer and Sponsorship Manager and was awarded with Life Membership in 2016.

Jon is a National Financial Manager and therefore brings his extensive knowledge in management and finance to the board.

Sarah Michell

Sarah is a qualified teacher and currently the Programs Manager at WA Disabled Sports Association. 

She is the founding president of the Coastal Titans Women's Football Club and still holds this position. 

In the past Sarah has been a board member of the WAWFL and was the 2012 WAWFL Volunteer of the Year. 

She is a former WAWFL State Assistant Coach and will take on the Female Football board portfolio.

Scott Rauschenberger

Scott played 240 games for the North Beach Football Club up until 2012 before he took on coaching support roles. He won a premiership in 1994 and his teams best and fairest in 2010. 

Scott is a Certified Practising Accountant who is currently a Chief Financial Officer for an ASX listed exploration company. He is member of the Finance and Administration Sub-Committee and has over 20 years of local and international commerce experience.

Scott's board portfolio is Finance and Risk.

Rob Steel

Rob played 350 senior games of football between 1981 and 2002. He has won 10 premierships as a player for Wembley (‘78), Wanneroo (‘81, ‘83, ‘88, ‘91, ‘92, ’97 and ‘98) and Toodyay Football Clubs (‘09). He is currently playing football for the Kingsway Football Club Masters team bringing his games total to over 400. 

He has also held various coaching roles including assistant coach of the East Perth Football Club Reserves for five years, Kingsway reserves coach in ’96, ’00 and ’01 and the Kingsway League coach from 2010-2012. He coached the Subiaco development squads 13’s and 14’s between 1988-1993 and coached Toodyay Football Club to three premierships in 2004, 2005 and 2009. He was an assistant coach of the State Country V WAAFL in 2010 and a Masters coach at National Carnivals. Rob also has an interest in Women’s football, coaching the State Women’s side in 2006 and has been the assistant coach of the Coastal Titans since 2014. 

Rob has also been on the committee for the AFCA (1994 – 2005) and was re-elected in 2016. He is the current president of the Kingsway Football Club, a position he has held since 2013. Outside of football Rob works as a station officer for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
